The Albany Firebirds delivered a strong second-half performance to secure a 48–24 victory over the Oregon Lightning in Week 3 action at the First Interstate Bank Center.
Albany set the tone early, matching Oregon score-for-score in the opening quarter as both teams ended the first tied at 7–7. The Lightning continued to battle in the second quarter, keeping the game tight heading into halftime with the Firebirds holding a narrow 21–14 lead.
Coming out of the break, Albany created separation. The Firebirds outscored Oregon 13–2 in the third quarter to take control of the game, extending their lead to 34–16. The momentum carried into the final quarter, where Albany continued its offensive efficiency to close out the 48–24 win.
Quarterback Josh Kulka led the offensive charge with six touchdown passes, distributing the ball across a deep group of playmakers. Wide receiver Duane Brown led the way with three touchdown receptions, while Tyrese Chambers, Darien Townsend, and Isaiah Scott each added a score. Fullback Trevon Shorts contributed with a touchdown on the ground to round out Albany’s scoring.
Defensively, the Firebirds made key stops that shifted momentum and prevented Oregon from capitalizing in critical situations. A pivotal fourth-down sack by Chiz Umunkwe and Prince Umanmielen resulted in a turnover on downs deep in Albany territory, halting a promising Oregon drive.
Later in the game, Chiz Umunkwe came up with a clutch interception in the fourth quarter after a tipped pass at the line, securing possession for Albany and shutting down another Oregon opportunity.
The Firebirds also delivered multiple red zone stands, showcasing discipline and execution under pressure. A goal-to-go sequence highlighted by a tipped pass from Tre Wortham and the ensuing fourth-down sack forced a turnover on downs. On another possession, tight coverage from Lorenzo Jones and Wortham led to consecutive incompletions, once again resulting in a turnover on downs and preserving Albany’s lead.
After a competitive first half, Albany’s ability to adjust on both sides of the ball proved to be the difference. With offensive efficiency and timely defensive stops, the Firebirds secured a decisive road victory and will look to carry that momentum forward as the season continues.
