Firebirds Punch Ticket Back to Arena Crown with 69-56 Semifinal Victory Over Minnesota

ALBANY, N.Y. — The Albany Firebirds are headed back to the Arena Crown.

Behind an outstanding performance from quarterback Sam Castronova, the defending champions defeated the Minnesota Monsters 69-56 on Saturday afternoon at MVP Arena to earn their third consecutive trip to the championship game.

Castronova completed 20 of 27 passes for 304 yards and nine touchdown passes without an interception. His favorite targets, Duane Brown and Darien Townsend, combined for eight touchdown receptions and 217 receiving yards in one of Albany's most explosive offensive performances of the season.

Brown hauled in six catches for 108 yards and four touchdowns, while Townsend matched him with six receptions for 109 yards and four scores. Isiah Scott added six catches for 69 yards and a touchdown as the Firebirds scored on nine possessions without committing a turnover.

Despite building multiple leads throughout the game, Albany was forced to withstand a determined fourth-quarter comeback from Minnesota.

The Monsters cut the deficit to 58-56 with 2:41 remaining and elected to go for a game-tying two-point conversion. Linebacker Drew Singleton delivered the game's biggest defensive play, intercepting the conversion attempt in the end zone and returning it the length of the field for two points to extend the Firebirds' lead to 60-56.

Moments later, Castronova put the game away with a 39-yard touchdown strike to Townsend. Kicker Bailey Hale converted the extra point before adding a deuce on the ensuing kickoff, capping an 11-point closing run that sealed Albany's return to the Arena Crown.

Minnesota quarterback Ja'Vonte Johnson threw for 416 yards and eight touchdowns, leading an explosive passing attack that kept the Monsters within striking distance all afternoon. Jarvai Flowers caught seven passes for 157 yards and five touchdowns, while Carlos Thompson Jr. added 10 receptions for 193 yards and two scores.

Hale also made a significant impact on special teams, converting seven extra points and adding three deuces.

The semifinal featured plenty of fireworks, as the teams combined for 125 points, 720 passing yards and 17 touchdown passes in one of the highest-scoring games of the AF1 season.

With the victory, the Firebirds improved to 10-3 and moved one win away from defending their Arena Crown title. Albany will host the 2026 Arena Crown on Saturday, Aug. 8, at MVP Arena after the Michigan Arsenal defeated the Nashville Kats in Sunday's semifinal.

Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET / 3:00 p.m. CT as the Firebirds look to capture their second consecutive AF1 championship in front of the home crowd.
