Albany Firebirds Launch “Hero of the Game” Initiative with Patriot Hills NY, Honor Vietnam War Veteran Bill Frank

The Albany Firebirds are proud to announce the launch of their new Hero of the Game initiative in partnership with Patriot Hills NY, a program dedicated to recognizing and honoring local veterans and community heroes throughout the season.

The initiative officially debuted this past gameday, as the Firebirds honored Vietnam War veteran Bill Frank.

Born June 1, 1947, in St. Paul, Minnesota, Frank grew up in Queens and Long Island, New York. He graduated from Chaminade High School in 1965 before attending Niagara University, where he earned his degree in 1969.

Upon graduation, Frank was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Finance Corps. He began active duty in 1970, stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, where he ran the Class B Agent Finance Office attached to the Personnel Office from July 1970 to July 1971. During this time, he served in a Captain’s slot and was promoted to First Lieutenant in July 1971.

Frank was later assigned to Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, serving as a disbursing officer in the Finance Office. He also led the finance office in Nha Trang, Vietnam, continuing his service in a Captain’s slot during his deployment.

He left Vietnam and active duty in December 1977, after serving in the U.S. Army Finance Corps and ultimately being released from the Army Reserve at the rank of Captain.

Frank also dedicated 13 years of service as the Director of the Schenectady County Veterans Service Agency, where he played a key role in supporting and advocating for local veterans across the Capital Region.

During the game, Frank was recognized for his military service, leadership, and lifelong commitment to the veteran community. His recognition marked the first of many planned honors as part of the Firebirds’ new season-long initiative.

The Hero of the Game program, with Patriot Hills NY, will highlight a different veteran at each home game, celebrating individuals who have made a lasting impact through service, leadership, and dedication to others.

The Albany Firebirds are committed to honoring and supporting veterans like Bill Frank, recognizing their service, sacrifice, and lasting impact on the Capital Region community.
