ALBANY FIREBIRDS RE-SIGN 2025 AF1 MOST VALUABLE PLAYER SAM CASTRONOVA

ALBANY, N.Y. — The Albany Firebirds have re-signed quarterback Sam Castronova, the 2025 Arena Football One (AF1) Most Valuable Player and 2025 Arena Crown Champion, for the 2026 season.

Castronova returns to Albany following a historic 2025 campaign that ranks among the most accomplished seasons by a quarterback in Arena Football and AF1 history. Across the regular season and playoffs, he accounted for 70 total touchdowns, throwing for 61 passing touchdowns while adding nine rushing touchdowns. He finished the season with 2,271 passing yards and 179 rushing yards, demonstrating consistent production as both a passer and a dual-threat playmaker.

His performance earned him AF1 Most Valuable Player honors as well as Championship Game MVP, underscoring his impact throughout the season and during the Firebirds’ championship run.

In August 2024, Castronova signed with the Memphis Showboats of the United Football League. However, following league restructuring and the team’s relocation, he was released by the UFL.

Head Coach Damon Ware emphasized Castronova’s importance to the organization both on and off the field.

“Sam is definitely going to get other opportunities in the future, but I am super excited to continue to develop, work, and compete for championships with a player of his caliber. He is not just an athlete, but a young man of great character,” said Ware.

Over the course of Castronova’s career, he has won three arena football championships, including titles with Albany in 2022, Jacksonville in 2023, and the 2025 Arena Crown Championship with Albany.

The re-signing of Castronova brings years of leadership and championship experience at the quarterback position as the Firebirds prepare for the biggest season in Albany Firebirds history. The Firebirds’ home opener is scheduled for Saturday, April 11 at 7:00 p.m. inside MVP Arena, when Albany will face the Minnesota Monsters in the Arena Football One season opener.
