Firebirds Celebrate Former NFL Talent as the NFL Season Kicks Off
The NFL season officially kicks off today, and the Albany Firebirds are proud to recognize several members of the organization who have ties to the league. These athletes and coaches bring with them valuable experience at football’s highest level, helping shape the Firebirds’ championship culture in the Capital Region.
Tony Bowick, the Firebirds’ offensive line coach, was selected in the 12th round of the 1989 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons. His professional background and decades of football knowledge make him a cornerstone of the coaching staff.
Defensive back Derrick Jones was a sixth-round pick of the New York Jets in the 2017 NFL Draft. After competing at the highest level, Jones now brings veteran leadership and playmaking ability to the Firebirds.
On the sidelines, Coach Arthur Hobbs adds experience from his time with the Los Angeles Chargers. His perspective as a former NFL defensive back continues to elevate Albany’s defense.
Ezekiel Rose, a powerful defensive lineman, spent time with the Baltimore Ravens. His toughness and skill in the trenches have carried over to the Firebirds, where he remains a force up front.
At quarterback, Sam Castronova had a stint with the Buffalo Bills before becoming one of the most dynamic signal-callers in arena football. Castronova led the Firebirds to the Arena Crown 2025 Championship and has since signed with the Memphis Showboats of the United Football League (UFL), continuing his rise in the professional ranks.
As the NFL season gets underway, the Firebirds celebrate these individuals who’ve earned opportunities at the sport’s highest level while continuing to build Albany’s tradition as one of the most iconic cities in arena football.
