Firebirds defeat Minnesota Monsters in Home Opener

ALBANY The Albany Firebirds opened the 2026 Arena Football One season with an impressive 50-23 victory over the Minnesota Monsters at MVP Arena, powered by a breakout performance from quarterback Joshua Kulka in his first ever professional football game.

Thrust into the starting role just days before kickoff, Kulka rose to the occasion, throwing five touchdown passes in his debut. Surrounded by a talented receiving corps, the rookie settled in as the game progressed and helped lead Albany to a dominant second half performance.

The Firebirds struck early, as Kulka connected with Isiah Scott for a touchdown on the opening drive. Despite a few early setbacks including a safety and a late first half interception, Albany carried a 21-17 lead into halftime.

The turning point came in the third quarter. Facing fourth and long deep in their own territory, Kulka delivered a deep ball to Darien Townsend for a 38 yard touchdown, shifting momentum firmly in Albany’s favor.

From there, the Firebirds took control.

Kulka added three more touchdown passes in the second half, including two to Duane Brown, while the defense limited Minnesota to just one score after the break. Brown also made an impact on special teams, returning a missed field goal for a touchdown.

Albany’s depth was on full display throughout the night. Townsend led the team in receiving yards, Scott added another strong performance, and Tyrese Chambers stepped up with a touchdown after entering the game in the second half. On the defensive side, Alphonso Taylor contributed with a fourth quarter interception.

With a strong opening win secured, Albany now turns its attention to Week 2, hitting the road to face the Beaumont Renegades in Texas.
